Indian Head Massage Routine

Part one: Upper back and shoulders.

  1. Hands on shoulders, take 3 deep breaths. Move the hands to either side of head.
  2. Smooth strokes, effleurage, each side of upper back and across shoulders x 3.
  3. Fingers on shoulders, thumb sweep from spine to shoulders working upwards.
  4. Heel of hand rub. Between the shoulder blades and across shoulders.
  5. Finger frictions, between the shoulder blades. Use 3 fingers in back and forth motion.
  6. Effleurage, as in 3.
  7. Middle knuckle of the 1st and 2nd fingers either side of spine. From the base of neck to the mid spine. Press on the out breath.
  8. Thumb pushes over the shoulders. Palms at the corners. Work out to in.
  9. Fingers pulls. Thumbs hook onto the shoulders and fingers are drawn back.
  10. Heel of the hand pushes over shoulders. Hand pushes and rolls over shoulders.
  11. Pick up the shoulder muscle and squeeze. Thumb behind, fingers in front.
  12. Smoothing with the fore arms, from neck outwards.
  13. Chopping. Squeezing between fingers, hands flat on back.
  14. Hacking over shoulders.
  15. Gentle pick up and squeeze of the shoulders.
  16. Smoothing across the upper back and shoulders.
  17. Rest the hands on the shoulders to finish.

Part two: Upper arm massage.

  1. Gently squeeze the arms working from the top of the arms to the elbows while standing to the side of client.
  2. Squash arms. Each arm in turn. Place the palm behind the arm and other hand squashing the front of the arm.
  3. Heel roll. Start from the top of the arms work downwards to the elbows. Roll the heels of the hands from behind the arm to meet finger tips.
  4. Heel roll and pick. Same action as in 3, but pull muscle from bone.
  5. Mobilise shoulder. Stand to the side of the client, with the inner arm supporting the elbow and the other on top of the shoulder, rotate arm.
  6. Shoulder lift. Stand behindthe client and lift arms at elbows at the client's in breath. Lower on the out breath.
  7. Smoothing. Fore arm smooth from the top of the shoulders and down the upper arms.

Part three: Neck massage.

  1. Rocking head. Hand on the back of the neck and forehead, gently rock the head.
  2. Finger grasp at neck. Tilt the head back and with other hand massage the neck.
  3. Frictions. 3 extended fingers from the end of the shoulder to under the skull while supporting the head.
  4. Thumb pushes. Tilt head. Thumb push from the back of the neck to the front of the neck. Work up the neck.
  5. Finger pulls. Thumb anchored at the spine, the inner forefinger pulls back.
  6. Frictions to base of skull. Support the forehead, the 3 extended fingers move from behind the ear to the spine.
  7. Heel rub under base of skull, support fore head.
  8. Smooth base of skull with the whole hand.
  9. Pressure points of base of skull with the tips of the fingers. 1 in centre 2 either side. Rock head back gently.
  10. Neck stretch. Support the head and tilt to the side, press on the shoulder with other arm.
  11. Smooth neck with the whole hand.

Part four: Scalp massage.

  1. Rubbing x 3. Support the side of the head, use the ball of hand to lightly rub just above the ears.
  2. Frictions. To the same area but with 3 fingers extended.
  3. Rubbing to the whole scalp.
  4. Whole hand friction. Firm pressure with the whole hand in a windscreen wiper motion.
  5. Ruffling. Whole scalp.
  6. Pluck the hair.
  7. Smoothing/combing. From the front of the scalp to the back of the scalp.
  8. Tapping. Use the finger tips to lightly tap the whole scalp.
  9. Pressure points. Use finger tips to apply pressure, move the hands to work over the whole scalp.
  10. Squeeze and lift. Work from behind the ears to front of the ears. Take the head in both hands and move upwards.
  11. Circular temple friction. Use the heel of the hands.
  12. Squeeze/claw. One hand on the front of the head the other at the back, allow the hands to meet.
  13. Smoothing. Rub and stroke the scalp.

Part five: Face massage.

  1. Smoothing, using fingers to move across the lower face to the forehead.
  2. Pressure points with finger pads from nose bridge to hair line. Around the eyes, then side of nose and follow around cheekbones.
  3. Pressure points around temples. Move in a circular pattern.
  4. Ear massage, fore finger and thumb. Move from the top of the ears downwards.
  5. Smoothing as in 1.
  6. Gentle hand placing. Both hands over the lower face, heels over ears. Swivel the hands around to the nose. Next to the fore head. Place hands over head.
  7. Chakras. One hand on the crown the other over the throat. Move to the 3rd eye. Both hands over the crown.
  8. Rest one hand over the 3rd eye and massage the back of the neck.
  9. Smooth back and shoulders gently. Rest the hands on the shoulders and slowly release.
